Brazil, the largest country of South America, is home to a people as diverse as the land in which they live. Their culture is a mixture of African, European, and native Indian influences molded together into a colorful and unique heritage with local customs and ideas as separate as the country's vast spaces will allow. Though there are many cultural differences among the Brazilian people, the children, like chldren everywhere, find a common love in the ball game. It is a common sight in this South American country to see young boys leaping into the air, imagining they are famous soccer stars challenging opponents in Sao Paulo's Pacaembu Stadium or in some other large Brazilian city's arena. They learn early in life to love this sport. In fact, as soon as boys can toddle, they begin practicing soccer by kicking oranges or tennis balls around their homes. However, in Brazil, not just the children enjoy ball games -- adults too are great fans of soccer, or futbol as it is called in Brazil. When Sunday arrives, stadiums throughout Brazil are packed with families who have journeyed from afar to watch this exciting sport played out. The athletes that play for national and South American championships are like the big league baseball and football players in America -- the best players are heroes throughout Brazil. The children of Brazil find in this favorite sport a source of unity and pride uncommon in other aspects of their vastly different lives.
