Marjorie Saynor: Children of China People on bicycles, in streetcars and on foot, jam Beijing's busy streets. In port cities, floating houseboats crowd into the bustling harbors. On a quiet country road, an old man with his horse-drawn cart moves slowly through the rising dust. On collective farms, oxen-powered irrigation systems water thriving rice paddies. China is a potpourri of past and present, a modern nation managed by people whose civilization stretches back thirty-five thousand years. For centuries, the Chinese have retained a very special place for children in their busy lives. Each year they celebrate Children's Day on June 1, with multi-colored balloons, wildly waving flags and light-hearted dancing. For Chinese youngsters childhood is a joyous time. They must attend one of the many new schools rising quickly throughout China. With their dark hair and dancing eyes, these young school children are adorable and well-mannered. Even preschool toddlers are extremely polite, well-behaved and capable. Through education of the children, China continues to move into the modern world. But, bound by ancient traditions, the Chinese easily step back into history through the many treasured relics and magnificent buildings which are remnants of their feudal past. This artwork depicts several Chinese children having a snowball fight beneath the watchful eye of one of two ancient bronze lions guarding the gate of Beijing's once Forbidden City.
