Marjorie Saynor: Children of Fiji The perfect place for an idyllic childhood lies among the sea and sand surrounded by magnificent ships and beautiful coral reefs. This is Fiji, a group of scattered islands floating in splendid isolation within the foam washed reefs of the South Pacific. Mystical and fascinating, Fiji is a fragmented land where nature's beauty still reigns supreme. For here, the intrusion of other civilizations has not subdued the natural zest and happiness of a joyful island people. Brought up in this relaxed atmosphere, it is no wonder Fijian children respond with happiness and strong affection for their families. Fiji is actually made up of about eight hundred islands. For many centuries, the islands were unknown to western seafarers, despite the fact that the two main islands have been inhabited for at least 3500 years. In 1643, the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman first sighted the islands and Captain James Cook visited them in 1774. Later, the Fiji islands were observed by the infamous Captain Bligh during his epic voyage in an open boat after the mutiny on the "Bounty." In the nineteenth century, traders introduced the first firearms to the island people and missionaries opened schools where the local tongue was transcribed into a written language for the first time. In 1874, Fiji became a British Crown colony and remained so until October 10. 1970, when it gained full independence. Today, Fiji is a free nation of proud people ... people rightfully proud of their ancient heritage and peaceful way of life.
