Marjorie Saynor: Children of Iraq An independent nation since 1932, Iraq is an Arab republic located at the head of the Persian Gulf. The country consists of four major land regions, including the Upper Plain, the Lower Plain, the Mountains and the Desert. A region of dry, rolling grasslands, the Upper Plain lies between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers, while the Lower Plain begins near Samarra and extends to the Persian Gulf. This area consists of fertile wetlands, swamps and marshy lakes. The mountains of northeastern Iraq form part of the Zagros range in Iran and the Taurus range in Turkey, while the southern and western regions of the country comprise part of the Syrian Desert. This desert area contains important limestone hills and vast sand dunes. About eighty percent of Iraq's population is Arab, and the country's primary religion is Islam. Less than half of its people live in small villages and farm for a living, while the rest dwell in the city, where they work as craftsmen, government workers or professional people. Iraq's economy depends heavily on both agriculture and oil products. Most of the country's crops, which include cotton, rice and tobacco, are grown along the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, although farmers in the north raise barley, fruits and olives. Petroleum production constitutes Iraq's most important industry, and accounts for more than ninety percent of the country's exports. Other important minerals also found in the country include gypsum, salt and sulfur.
