Vladimir Dmitrievich Kolganov: Yellow-Crested Penguin The almost comic-looking Yellow-crested Penguin is easily recognized by its bright red beak and the distinctive yellow feathers that form crests above its eyes. The spindle-shaped body, flipper wings, rear-insert legs, and rudder-like tail of this well-adapted creature make him an excellent swimmer, and his strong red beak is an asset when snapping fish from the sea. Since he must swim in icy water, he must greatly increase his activity to maintain his body heat. This bird can withstand long periods without food, and he may drink both salt and fresh water. These dietary adaptations are a great aid when brooding nestlings on the barren antarctic ices. Alternately, both male and female incubate the eggs. The incubating parent must survive on built-up body weight while the other bird is gone for two long weeks. Two eggs are incubated and just one of these usually hatches. Within three weeks, all the young are herded together in "kindergartens" while adults leave to hunt food in the sea. On their return, the adults easily pick their young from the scores of look-alike young Penguins. The Yellow-crested Penguins breeding colony breaks up near the end of February. By this time, the nestlings are grown and it is time for all to go to sea.
