Webb Garrison: Superb Blue Wren
The Superb Blue Wren is a very small bird growing from 13-15cm long. The male has a bright blue plumage on his head while the female is a dull green brown. Breeding males have blue plumage around the crown and neck. The back of the neck, lower back, throat and breast are black and the wings are a grey-brown. Females and non-breeding males have brown upper parts with pale breast and underparts. They are found from south-eastern Queensland down as far as Tasmania and west through to southern Eyre Peninsula (South Australia). It prefers shrubby habitat with interspersed clearings where it forages for small insects. Breeding season is mainly from September to January (but may also extend to March). It makes a small, grass ball as a nest usually in a dense bush about 3 feet off the ground. The Superb Blue Wren lives in a group as a family party and are normally well accustomed to human activity.
