Gene Jarvis: Yellow Breast Also known as the Bananaquit, the Yellow Breast is a bright little bird that lives mostly in lowland forests. A mere four to five inches long, this bird has upper parts that are sooty-gray to sooty-black, dramatically offset by a bright yellow or greenish-yellow breast and rump. A conspicuous white stripe over the eyebrow and a decidedly curved bill complete its most distinguishing characteristics. Bananaquits are a tropical group which ranges from Mexico to Argentina and the West Indies islands. They always travel alone or in pairs and never congregate in flocks. The sexes are similar in coloring and eat insects, spiders, and particularly nectar. Their tongues are cleft and fringed for nectar feeding and they can be see hanging head down or tackling flowers bigger than they are to find the precious substance. The song of the Yellow Breast is high-pitched and thin and is heard almost constantly through every month of the year. Breeding can take place almost any time, too. An especially interesting trait of the Yellow Breast, is its nesting habits. The male builds most of the nest out of strips of fiber from dead banana leaves. The female then lines and finishes it for the eggs. The nest is a globular-shaped structure usually located at a moderate elevation above the ground near the extremity of a branch of a tree or shrub. The entrance is on the side and near the bottom. The male also builds a series of roosting nests nearby, in which he sleeps.
