Gene Jarvis: Green-throated Carib The lovely Green-throated Carib is one of the special pleasures of the island of Barbados. The sight of this tiny, coloful gem flitting from flower to flower, or hovering above a nectar-filled blossom brings the wonder of nature t o full fruition. A mere four and three-quarters inches long, the Green-throated Carib is a hummingbird with predominantly green plumage and a rich violet-blue patch on its breast. Like many other hummingbirds it is ornamented with a gorget, which is a band or patch of distinctive color on the throat. In this case, the gorget is a lovely green. Hummingbirds are a fascinating group including three hundred nineteen species. Perhaps their most interesting trait is a remarkable ability to fly. For in quick, darting flight, in sudden starts and stops, and in its complete mastery of movement in the air, the hummingbird reigns supreme. The immense power of its flight is derived from huge pectoral muscles, which are relatively the largest in the animal kingdom. In dodging, darting flight, this tiny bird can reach speeds of fifty miles an hour, with is wings beating so rapidly they produce the familiar humming noise for which it is named. During courtship flights the hummingbird towers and dives and performs other aerial maneuvers bringing its wing beats as high as two hundred beats per second, as compared to an average of only sevety-five per second for normal flight. The humming bird can hover motionless like a helicopter, move straight up, down or sideways and even backwards.
