Located at the junciton of three continents, Israel is a nation with a rich abundance of wildlife. Indeed, more than forty-five different species of birds of prey may be found in Israel. Some of the species of birds remain in Israel year round ... others pass through on their annual migratory routes. Many of these maginificent birds, including the rare Bonelli's Eagle, inhabit the Negev and Judean Deserts. Originally this area served as a place of refuge for Jewish zealots, monks and other who wished to live in isolation. Today, however, this vast wilderness is a sanctuary for birds of prey. The sanctuary provides the endangered Bonelli's Eagles with nesting areas in rocky clefts and on the side of steep cliffs. These lofty nesting sights are ideal for the Bonelli's Eagle to scan the skies and ground for its prey. Once its prey is sighted, the Bonelli's Eagle is almost assured of a meal -- for it exceeds all other eagles in boldness and speed. Often, this fasciniating bird will make a daring dive by folding in its wings and swooping after small flying birds like doves and pigeons. As they dive and wheel after their prey, these eagles are capable of reaching incredible speeds up to 125 mph! After catching its prey, the Bonelli's Eagles often soar through the skies for hours making graceful sweeping figures.
