A multitude of dusky gray feathers give the Great Gray Owl, the largest of owls, an appearance of being even larger than he is. This enormous owl, measuring twenty-four to thirty-four inches in length, finds his home in northern coniferous forests on both sides of the Atlantic. Inhabitants of the wild, Great Gray Owls claim deserted nests deep in thick spruce and pine forests. Usually, no new material is brought to the nest, but the Great Gray Owl does attempt to deepen the dwelling. Occasionally, their fervent efforts result in the nest bottom dropping out. Between mid-April and mid-May, one to nine eggs are laid in the nest. The female incubates these eggs for thirty days while the male bird supplies her food. The young hatch and are fed by the father's hunting efforts until ready to leave the nest at about three weeks old. Reluctant fliers, the young Great Gray Owls spend much time hopping from branch to branch in the tree next to their former home. Once the young are out of the nest, both male and female resume hunting. Though hunting may occur anytime, it is less successful in bright sunlight or in extreme darkness. Prey is located mostly by hearing and the Great Gray Owl's perfectly concentric facial discs are thought to endow the bird with a superior sense of hearing. The Great Gray Owl feasts primarily on voles and shrews and is reluctant to switch from these two mainstays, even if it means migrating.
