Gene Jarvis: Eleanora's Falcon Eleanora's Falcons, named after fourteenth century Sardinian war leader, regent and judge, Princess Eleanor d'Arborea, are well adapted to conduct their hunting expeditions in the air. Swift and sure, their massive wings beat trhough the air, propelling them forward at top speeds. The live exclusively in the Mediterranean Islands and are found most often on the coasts of Crete, Cyprus and Sardinia. These fast-flying falcons support strong ties with the sea and make their nests high in the sheer, steep cliffs on shore. Sociable and fond of company, they breed around August in colonies of as many as fifty mated pairs. In such large groups, Eleanora's Falcons are able to conduct massive hunting trips to feed their young. Each morning, adult members of the breeding colony form a flying barrier. By moving into the wind, their bird barrier catches migrant birds flying downwind. Although hunting slackens off later in the day, this method of providing food keeps young falcons extremely well fed. Scientists have estimated that 2500 pairs of falcons can kill up to one and a quarter million migrant birds each season. The migrating birds that make up the falcons' diets include shrikes, woodchats, warblers, nightingales and larks. At other times, insects such as beetles or grasshoppers round out the falcons' diets. As soon as the young falcons become independent enough to provide their own food, the colonies migrate to Madagascar.
