Gene Jarvis: Golden Eagle Slow, powerful wingbeats carry the Golden Eagle over the countryside. Often called the King of Birds and the Royal Eagle, it is indeed a magnificent creature when seen in flight. The adult bird is covered with dark brown plumage and the nape of its neck bears beautiful, golden feathers. The bird's bill is a powerful weapon. So strong is this resplendent creature that in legend, it is credited with carrying children off in its talons. Although the Golden Eagle is a formidable predator, it is unlikely that the bird could accomplish this feat. Whether searching for prey or simply soaring for enjoyment, the Golden Eagle drifts through the sky in a flight that looks effortless. The bird rises high in the sky until it si a mere dark speck in the heavens. Then, it swoops toward the earth, attaining breathtaking speeds of 150 to 200 miles per hour. It appears that this proud, regal creature will surely plummet to a gruesome death. But the Eagle knows the precise moment to pull out of its dive and again soar in to the sky ... or snatch a hapless rabbit form the field below. Throughout the Golden Eagle's expansive habitat -- including the mountains of Europe, North Africa, North America and Asia -- he is everywhere enjoyed as one of nature's most beautiful and noble birds.
