Gene Jarvis: Long Crested Eagle
The Long Crested Eagle is a beautiful bird of prey with brownish-black plumage trimmed with white feathers along the front edge of its wings and legs. But the most noticeable feature of the bird is the distinctive crest feathers on top of its head which gently sweep forward, giving the Eagle a noble appearance. An excellent hunter, the Long Crested Eagle is well equipped with a strong, curved beak and powerful talons. Preferring to hunt in early morning and evening hours, the Eagle will frequently spend much of the day perched high atop a dead tree surveying the ground below for rodents, lizards or frogs. When hunger stirs it from its perch the Eagle soars in flight while its piercing cry fills the woodlands. Noticing a movement on the ground, this regal bird swoops down to a low, skimming flight a few feet above the ground. The bird is so tenacious that it has been observed plunging into deep shrubbery to capture its prey.
