Gene Jarvis: Imperial Parrot Of the many species of parrots, among the most popular and entertaining are the Blunt-tailed Parrots. Found in the tropical jungles of Africa and in other warm parts of the world, Blunt-tailed Parrots can be found flying in great flocks over their forest homelands. As young birds, these parrots are easily captured and tamed ... and the exporting of parrots as house pets is an important part of the economy for many countries. These intelligent birds adapt well to captivity and are fond of human companionship. They are also known as excellent imitators, and many of these interesting birds have learned to mimic not only their human keepers but the family dog or cat as well. In their natural setting, Blunt-tailed Parrots are awkward flyers and walk clumsily on the ground. However, they are excellent climbers, and in captivity the birds will many times completely forgo used of their wings. The largest, and perhaps one of the most beautiful, of all Blunt-tail Parrots is the Imperial Parrot. This striking bird has brilliant green plumage with neck and chest feathers of an iridescent purple. Once found in the thousands, the Imperial Parrot is now rare and is protected.
