Philip Sharland: People Helping Each Other In addition to becoming physically and mentally fit to meet the obligations of adult living, the young person must develop a sense of community responsibility if he is to be a well-rounded adult. Recognizing this quality as an important part of adult life, Great Britain has established community service as a major category in its Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme for youth. The painting honors the service aspect of the award scheme. The girls depicted emphasizes the importance of helping the community. Applying First Aid to an injured person requires quick thinking, special knowledge and skills that are a credit to both adults and young persons. But, service as honored by the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme encompasses more than just First Aid skill. It honors willingness to help others. Whether painting the home of an elderly woman or sharing a cheery visit with a person confined to the hospital, the young person who cares for his fellow man and his needs is a true asset to his community and country. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme encourages the young person to care for his fellow man and his needs. It is hoped that if youth develop these caring attitudes and skills early in life, the skills will stay with the teenager into adulthood, making him a caring, concerned citizen who will strive to make the world a better place to live for all people.
