Philip Sharland: Camping and Hiking As young people in countries around the world grow up they are confronted with many challenges to their success. Standing on the threshold of adulthood, they are at times unsure of their skills and at a loss for direction in their lives. For this reason twenty-five years ago, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme was established in Great Britain to inspire young people to accept the challenges of the world around them and do their very best in all their endeavors. The painting focuses on the section of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme devoted to expeditions. Physical fitness and the ability to meet and overcome nature's challenges are honored in this section of the award scheme. The founders of the award believe that whether the young participant is a budding mountain climber in Australia or a back packer in England's lovely Lake District, he can find satisfaction in overcoming the barriers and frustrations offered by the natural environment. Most importantly, the skills and expertise the youth gains while struggling against personal fatigue and other difficulties on the expedition will give him courage and confidence to face other challenges in life. In this way, the Duke of Edinburgh Award's expedition category of achievement prepares young people from Great Britain, Commonwealth countries and other areas of the world for the opportunities and obligations of adult living.
