Philip Sharland: Activities and Pastimes In 1981, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary. This unique award system recognizes young people for their notable achievements in four distinct areas of accomplishment: recreation, skill in hobbies or other special interest areas, special expeditions into the natural environment, and service to the community. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme was first established as an experimental project open to youth between the ages of fourteen and twenty-five, including those young people who are disabled and disadvantaged. Today, this program -- begun on such a tenuous basis -- has enjoyed great success and has grown into an award scheme including over one and a half million youth from the United Kingdom, Commonwealth countries and many other nations from the rest of the world. Offering enjoyment, challenge and a sense of satisfaction among its many rewards, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme today ranks as one of the awards most coveted by youth. It is also recognized by countries around the world as a challenging way for young people to prepare themselves for adult life.
