Ivan Akimovich Sushchenko: James Watt After repairing a Newcomen steam engine, Watt went on to improve it. By 1790, the Watt engine had completely replaced the older Newcomen variety, and James Watt was looked upon as the inventor of the steam engine. Out of his efforts to measure the power of his steam engine, he defined the word "horsepower." This unit of power in the metric system is called a "watt," in honor of the Scottish engineer. One horsepower equals 746 watts. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood® Commemorative Cover for the Great Scientists of the World series issued in 1987.
