This Gilbert and Sullivan opera, the composers' favorite, followed upon the heels of Ruddigore, a tale which combined supernatural elements with fine music and lyrics. But the public turned decidedly cold shoulders to Ruddigore, and first-night audiences therefore viewed the debut of The Yeomen of the Guard with initial trepidation. They need not have worried. A blazing success, the opera was considered by many -- critics and audiences alike -- the authors' finest work. Lavishly staged, the production involved elaborate sets, a complicated musical score and storyline, more solo parts and considerably larger chorus. The opera also more closely mirrored the aesthetic temperaments of both men, for each considered himself a serious artist and, surprisingly enough, viewed light opera with some disdain. The storyline contained some romantic elements, but they were cleverly mixed with moments of real drama and tragedy. While not entirely abandoning satire, the authors allowed the irony to drift delicately under the surface, while their characteristic humor and sparkling wit kept the opera from becoming tedious. The action takes place during the era of good Queen Bess, and the title refers to the Beefeaters who vigilantly guard the somewhat menacing Tower of London.
