Charles II of England earned the title of "Merry Monarch" for his reputed charm and excellent sense of humor. But, much of his life was clouded by civil war, exile, and religious discrimination. At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1642, Charles accompanied his father to the battle of Edgehill. Two years later, at the age of fourteen, he was appointed nominal commander-in-chief in western England. There, the Parliamentarians beleaguered the young Charles for a year, finally forcing him into exile. With his council, he bounced from the Sicilies to Jersey and finally to Paris. In early 1649, he learned of his father's execution at the hands of the Parliamentarians. A few days later, the monarchy was formally abolished by Cromwell's Purged Parliament. Charles devoted the next eleven years of his life to regaining the thrones of England and Scotland. On his thirtieth birthday, following the death of Oliver Cromwell, Charles was enthusiastically received in London, and was subsequently crowned in April 1661. Charles II reigned for twenty-five years. This period of British history was marked by the Great Plague of 1665, and the Great Fire just a year later. During his reign, Charles II sought revenge on the Dutch for the naval defeat he suffered at their hands in 1667. This revenge led to the "Secret Treaty of Dover," in which Charles promised to convert to Catholicism in return for French support. But, it was not until Charles was on his deathbed in 1685 that he was received into the Catholic Church.
