Ronald Maddox: Liverpool International Garden Festival On May 2, 1984, Queen Elizabeth II presided at opening ceremonies of the International Garden Festival in Liverpool. The Festival was convened to promote the improvement of decayed urban areas in a nation hit hard by the recession. The event will be remembered for the magnificent Festival Hall where the Festival was convened. A grand achievement of the architects of Great Britain, the Festival Hall is itself evidence of the British people's desire to enhance the beauty of their cities. The land on which the Festival Hall stands was once a rundown dockyard ... and of little use to anyone. Today, however, on this former urban wasteland, architects from the Arup Associates have created a massive modern complex set in the heart of 250 beautiful grass-covered acres. Chirping birds and gently swaying trees replace the decay of the old dockyards, and expansive walkways and extensive glassworks give the building an open look. It is truly an achievement of which the architects of Britain can be proud. The Hall was converted into a sports and leisure center.
