Stanley Paine: Royal Scot Locomotive A faint chiming whistle drifts through the English moors and a thin wisp of smoke trails into the sky. The chugging song of the powerful locomotive grows louder and clearer as she rounds the bend. Steadily slowing, the mighty steam engine pulls into the railway station, where crowds surround the great steam train -- the most powerful form of transportation of the day. Such was the scene from the early twentieth century when magnificent steam locomotives linked English villages and towns. Although most of the great steam locomotives have been discontinued, the romance of their bygone era still lingers.
