John Gibbs: Westminster Hall One of the most historic buildings in London, Westminster Hall was originally built by William II in 1097. With one of the largest timber-beam roofs in all of Europe, this hall was ornately decorated with a beautiful hammerbeam roof by Richard II in 1402. Westminster Hall was once the Great Hall of the Royal Palace of Westminster and the meeting place of the King's Great Council. This council, from which grew the Courts of Justice and the Parliament, is considered the mother of parliaments. Since the thirteenth century, Westminster Hall has been the home of the chief English law courts and the site of several of Britain's most publicized trials including those of Sir William Wallace, Thomas More, Guy Fawkes and Charles I. Since the nineteenth century, the hall has been used mainly for monarchs and other dignitaries lying-in-state, including such eminent statesmen as Sir Winston Churchill. In 1986, Westminster Hall was the site of the seventy-fifth annual Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference, which was attended by nearly fifty nations from around the world.
