Paul Leith: Kew Gardens: Pagoda In modern times, man has recognized the importance of the need to manage the earth's environment through increasing knowledge and a better understanding of the plant kingdom. Botanical collections and research activities of such institutions as Kew Gardens, located in the western outskirts of London, contribute greatly to this knowledge. Wandering among the shrubs and flowers, strolling along broad avenues with vistas of exotic buildings and trees -- such as the view of a cedar tree outside of Kew's Pagoda featured on this stamp and cachet -- transports the visitor to a world of tranquil beauty. At the same time, Kew serves as a haven for plants -- the trees, in particular -- which are earth's important source of both food and oxygen. Tropical rainforests harbor more than half of the earth's land plants, yet every year an area of rainforest almost as big as England itself is destroyed by demands for timber and fuel. The temperate forests contain a fraction of the remaining species of plants and these are under the constant attack of acid rain. But the temperate and rainforest trees are not just valuable in themselves, they also protect other useful plants whose genes can be used to improve trees and crops grown on plantations and farms, thus raising yields and reducing crop failure due to pests and disease. Rare species of plants threatened with extinction also find haven at Kew. Preserving strong plant strains as well as weaker species is an important contribution made by the Kew Gardens.
