Mark Schuler: Archbishop Amigo
Even as a young priest, Father Amigo's piety, religious fervor and social consciousness impressed all whom he met. It was these qualities that in 1901 earned him a position in the diocese of Southwark and the following year gained him the title of Vicar General there. Upon his Bishop's promotion, Father Amigo was appointed to fill the vacant See. Soon, he was consecrated the sixth Bishop of Southwark. Throughout his life, Amigo worked diligently to spread the Catholic faith in England. And with this aim in mind, he formed the Travelling Mission in that country. A man of strong convictions and a champion of justice, Father Amigo was a bold defender of Ireland's Catholics. His love for both the Irish and English people drove him to speak out against their senseless violence. His service to Britain did not go unnoticed and on the occasion of his Diamond Jubilee as a priest he received an expression of good will from the British King. In 1929 Bishop Amigo was made an assistant to the Pontificial Throne and in 1937, the Pope bestowed upon him the title of Archbishop. Soon after, when World War II broke out, Bishop Amigo lovingly ministered to his parishioners as well as to the Gibraltarian evacuees and the Belgium refugees. In 1949, the beloved Archbishop died, leaving behind an impressive legacy of love -- a church dedicated to the English martyrs, St. Augustine's House of Studies for young men planning to join the priesthood, and over a thousand priests whom he had ordained.
