Mark Schuler: Major General John Gaspard Le Marchant For all his life, John Gaspard Le Marchant wanted nothing more than to serve in the British Army. He loved the military -- the clash of the sword, the march, the courage -- and at a mere sixteen years of age he gave up his schoolbooks for a sword. His special love was the cavalry and he soon joined the Sixth Dragoons where his tact and prudence early gained him the approval of his colonel. Advancements followed in rapid succession for the zealous young soldier. And, in 1793 when war broke out against France, Le Marchant found himself in command of a cavalry brigade as a brigade major. During this battle, Le Marchant observed that the Austrian and Prussian forces were more effective than the British and he began to analyze his Army in hopes of improving its performance. In 1795, Le Marchant devised a system of cavalry sword drill and soon he began to redesign the sword used by his countrymen. Le Marchant's concern for Britain's military preparedness led to the establishment of a British military school with the tireless tactician La Marchant as commandant. In 1811, Le Marchant was promoted to Major General and returned to active duty in Spain as commander of the first heavy cavalry brigade in the Peninsular War. In a spectacular charge that cost the French the whole left wing of their army, Le Marchant was cut down by a stray bullet. His death was a tremendous loss to his country for Le Marchant was a born cavalry commander as well as a courageous hero of Great Britain.
