As a young boy in Guernsey, James Saumarez dreamed of nothing but the sea. It was no surprise when at the earliest possible moment he joined the Navy. His naval career was remarkable and he distinguished himself in battle on many occasions and on many different fronts. As commander of the Crescent, he displayed his valor by taking the French flagship Reunion. For this act, he was knighted in 1793. Later, in the Battle of the Nile, Sir Saumarez crushed the French fleet and was awarded the rank of Rear Admiral. That same year Saumarez defeated a Franco-Spanish fleet double his own strength winning membership n the Most Honorable Order of the Bath. In 1807, during renewed conflict with France, Britain declared Saumarez second in commmand of the Channel Fleet. But, perhaps his greattest lifetime achievement was accomplished a short time later while occupying the Baltic Sea for Britain. Britain and Sweden were two of the few countries not conquered by Napoleon and it was vital that trade between the two nations be kept open. Saumarez was appointd to see that it did. Because of Sweden's high regard for Saumarez, the Swedish king awarded him the Grand Cross of the Military Order of the Sword. Once peace was established in the Baltic, Saumarez returned to Britain to be made a full Admiral and soon was appointed Rear Admiral of Great Britain. Three years later, he became Vice Admiral of Great Britain. And, in 1831, he received the highest of honors, being raised to the peerage.
