Tom Bjarnason: British Antarctic Territories/Royal Wedding Remembered The moment which Prince Charles and Lady Diana had eagerly anticipated finally arrived. At last, the Royal Couple stood before the Archbishop of Canterbury in the great St. Paul's Cathedral to be married. The Dean of St. Paul's began the service, "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here in the sight of God ... to join this man and this woman in holy matrimony . . ." As he spoke, all eyes, and all hopes for a bright future, were on the handsome couple at the altar. Next, the Archbishop of Canterbury -- resplendent in the white robes of the Church -- addressed the Royal Cou- ple, leading them through their sacred wedding vows. Finally, the Archbishop spoke to the congregation, "Forasmuch as Charles Philip Arthur George and Diana Frances have consented together in holy wedlock, and have witnessed the same before God and this company ... I pronounce that they be man and wife together." The moment had arrived -- Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer were wed. The service was simple but its significance was great for on July 29, 1981, the Prince of Wales and his bride forged a new link in the continuity of the British throne. Once the marriage ceremony was complete, the Prince and Princess were seated for an address by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Then, as the choir sang Parry's anthem, I Was Glad, the Royal Couple rose and approached the altar for prayers. The scene was breathtaking as they stood before the altar ... carrying the hopes and prayers of the entire realm with them.
