Tom Bjarnason: Pitcairn Islands/Royal Wedding Remembered Like Royal Couples of decades past, Prince Charles and Princess Diana appeared on the Buckingham Palace balcony to greet the cheering throng gathered in their honor. The sight that met them was overwhelming. Tens of thousands of cheering Britons waving British flags shouted their congratulations from the streets. But, despite the size of the crowd and their uncontained happiness on the day of the Royal Wedding, the group was surprisingly well behaved. In fact, one amazed reporter exclaimed, "Nobody trod on the flowers." The observation perfectly summed up the good temper of the crowd gathered beneath the Buckingham Palace balcony. One by one, the wedding party assembled on the balcony. "Kiss her!" the crowd cried out. The Prince's lips could be seen querying his bride. Her answer was a resounding yes. Then, before the eyes of Britain and millions more well-wishers watching by television, the Royal Couple exchanged their first public kiss. It was a kiss thought to be the first balcony kiss in history. Romantics everywhere hailed it as a pleasing break with tradition and a telling reminder that Charles and Diana represent not only the British throne but the upcoming generation of Britons as well. The crowd was mad with joy. On July 29, 1981, Britain welcomed a new Princess of Wales for the first time since 1863, and it was cause for great celebration throughout the realm. This painting was originally published on a Fleetwood® First Day Cover in honor of Princess Diana's twenty-first birthday, July 1, 1982. 17 Commonwealth nations joined together to each issue four stamps in tribute.
