Tom Bjarnason: Tristan Da Cunha/Royal Wedding Remembered The wedding ceremony was history, the balcony appearances over and the official photographs taken. At last, the Prince and Princess of Wales prepared to leave Buckingham Palace for their honeymoon. At 4:30 p.m. they departed, riding in a State Landau decked out in silver balloons and a sign -- hastily painted in lipstick by Prince Andrew -- that declared that Charles and Diana were "Just Married." As the Landau left Buckingham Palace, the crowd cheered ecstatically, as it had all day, with each glimpse of the radiant Royal Couple. The landau carried Charles and Diana through the streets of London to Waterloo Station where they boarded a train bound for Romsey, Hampshire, and the late Earl Mountbatten's beloved Broadlands estate. By six o'clock that night the gates of Broadlands had closed behind them. Thus, the honeymoon began ... in the most guarded privacy Britain can provide. With the closing of the gates, the glorious royal wedding day came to a close. It had been everything Britain and the world had hoped it would be -- and was truly the Wedding of the Century. On that one bright summer day in London, Prince Charles and his bride had captured the imagination and adoration of the entire world. Indeed, a world thirsting for romance and starved for tradition will fondly remember the Royal Wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales, and the Lady Diana Spencer for decades to come.
