Tom Bjarnason: St. Helena/Royal Wedding Remembered As the newly-wed Royal Couple stood gazing out across the crowd gathered beneath the Buckingham Palace balcony, they surveyed a colorful and diverse throng. Amid the sea of faces assembled were many people proudly waving the British flag. Others sported comical hats featuring the red, white and blue colors of the Union Jack. There were banners bearing pictures of the Royal Couple, shirts designed after the British flag, commemorative buttons and souvenir booklets. The crowd had looked much the same all along the processional route the State Landau had taken from the Cathedral. One man outside St. Paul's had even painted his face in red, white and blue. For the most part, this joyful throng was composed of Britons. This is as it should have been, for the Royal Wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer was a thoroughly British celebration. From the mining towns of Wales, the stockbroker belts of Kent and Sussex, from Yorkshire and the Hebrides they came. Their journeys -- whether long or short -- were well rewarded. All the pageantry and tradition the Britons have come to expect from their royal family was there. It was a holiday of happiness and beauty they could all share in. Indeed, on July 29, 1981, Britain reaffirmed her faith in herself ... and in the throne. It was a holiday that will be long remembered both in Britain and throughout the world.
