Tom Bjarnason: 100th Anniversary of Regina The "Queen City" of the Saskatchewan plains was very nearly named Pile of Bones, because of the great number of bleached buffalo skeletons that dotted the surrounding prairie. However, it was rescued from this fate and named Regina (Latin for "queen") by Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria, in 1882. Regina was established in that year as a cluster of tents at the crossing of the new Canadian Pacific Railroad and Wascana River. The river, it was once said, "could not make up its mind which way to flow over the flat plain." But today, since it has been transformed into a lake, it is the heart of the Wascana Development Project, a multi-million-dollar center. The shores of Lake Wascana are now the setting for government and university buildings, beautiful public parks and tree-shaded picnic grounds. The trees of this historic town are very important, for Reginans judge the age of various sections of town by the height of the trees. Over the last fifty years thousands of trees have been imported, painstakingly watered in summer and protected from the fierce prairie blizzards in winter. In fact, beyond the much older downtown areas, the firs and maples are as yet no taller that the height of a rooftop, for the trees are still only striplings. It is in the beautiful city of Regina that Canada's legendary Royal Canadian Mounted Police has its principal training grounds.
