Tom Bjarnason: Fiji/Royal Wedding Remembered Amid the joyous ringing of St. Paul's twelve bells, the Royal Couple emerged from the Cathedral. Poet Laureate, Sir John Betjeman, was so enchanted with the bells that he wrote a couplet about them in his ode celebrating the wedding: "Come College Youths, release your / twelve voiced power / Concealed within the graceful / belfry tower / Till loud as breakers plunging up / the shore / The land is drowned in one / melodious roar." As the bells rang out in celebration, the Royal Couple paused to greet the crowd waiting outside the Cathedral. The welcome they received was overwhelming. Soon, the couple descended the Cathedral steps and entered the 1902 State Landau that would carry them to Buckingham Palace. The landau was pulled by four Greys and was the same carriage that brought Prince Charles to St. Paul's Cathedral before the wedding. Now, it would carry the newly-wed Prince and Princess through streets lined with well-wishers ... people clamoring for a look at the heir to the throne and his beautiful bride. Shortly, the couple's parents emerged from the Cathedral to follow the Prince and Princess to Buckingham Palace for a more private celebration of their wedding. As each glittering carriage drew up to St. Paul's Cathedral to pick up the members of the family, the bells continued to ring out their melodious carol. It was a resounding refrain that perfectly sang out the joy shared by an entire nation.
