Tom Bjarnason: Ascension/Royal Wedding Remembered Swathed in a mass of ivory tulle, Lady Diana Spencer entered the glass coach that would carry, her from Clarence House to St. Paul's Cathedral. Although the coach bore large windows, little could be seen of Lady Diana beneath her veil except her shy, winning smile. She was accompanied by her father, Earl Spencer. The coach they rode in had carried the Queen to her wedding in 1947 and Princess Anne to hers in 1973. Soon, the bride's coach joined the procession of royal coaches winding through London en route to St. Paul's Cathedral. Down the mall, through Admiralty Arch, and down the Strand, the glittering procession of royalty made its way toward the Cathedral. There were ostrich feathers, tricorn hats, and top boots ... in short all the trappings of royalty in its finest hours and grandest moments. First came the carriage of Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip radiant on their son's wedding day. The Queen Mother resplendent in plumes and pearls followed in the second carriage. She was escorted by Prince Edward who, at seventeen, would take part in his first royal occasion as one of Prince Charles' supporters. Princess Margaret and Princess Anne followed and finally from Buckingham Palace came Prince Charles in full naval dress accompanied by his brother, Prince Andrew. As the bride's coach entered the procession, it carried Lady Diana Spencer toward her new life as Princess of Wales. She was leaving her girlhood behind to become third lady of the realm.
