Tom Bjarnason: The Bahamas/Royal Wedding Remembered Amid rousing fanfare, Lady Diana's coach drew up to the steps of St. Paul's Cathedral. As the bride emerged from the coach, people lining the streets gasped at the first sight of Lady Diana's glorious wedding gown. Ten thousand sequins and pearls, and a tiny gold horseshoe for luck, were intricately embroidered to the dress. By all accounts, it was a theatrical dress with a seemingly endless lace-edged train. In fact, the gown's flowing train stretched out twenty-five feet behind the bride -- long enough to touch the bottom of the first flight of Cathedral steps when Lady Diana reached the top. As the bride and her father approached the sanctuary, the State Trumpeters of the Household Cavalry raised their instruments to announce the bride's arrival for wedding guests inside. One glance across the crowd confirmed that the world's statesmen, diplomats and royalty were all assembled for the event that had been anticipated for months as the Wedding of the Century. Dressed in glittering jewels and smartly taylored uniforms, each guest, by his attendance at the wedding, showed his respect for the Royal Couple and for the heritage of the British throne. But, no guest rivaled the incomparable beauty of Lady Diana on her wedding day. As the radiant bride entered St. Paul's Cathedral on her proud father's arm, all the world paused to admire not just her breathtaking wedding gown . . . but her unique virtues and charms that had won Britain's heart and would make her the perfect wife for the future monarch.
