Tom Bjarnason: Barbados/Royal Wedding Remembered Like a beautiful ship under full sail, Lady Diana ascended St. Paul's pillared portico. Immediately, state trumpeters raised their instruments to announce her arrival with resounding fanfare. All heads turned to catch a glimpse of Lady Diana, the young woman who had won the hearts of both Great Britain and the Prince of Wales many months before. Rarely has a bride made such a entrance. Then, on her father's arm, Lady Diana began her three-and-a-half minute procession up the sanctuary aisle to meet her Prince. Before her stretched over 650 feet of red carpet, the longest royal red carpet ever installed for an official occasion. Behind the bride and her proud father, young bridesmaids and pages stood posed, ready to follow the bride and her father up the nave. Musicians sounded their horns in the triumphal Trumpets Voluntary. Thus began the fairytale-like procession that would ultimately unite Lady Diana Spencer and Prince Charles in marriage. The bridal procession joined Prince Charles and his supporters, Prince Edward and Prince Andrew. At Diana's left stood her father, Earl Spencer. At her right stood her husband-to-be, the Prince of Wales. As the entire world watched, the Royal Couple stepped forward to recite their sacred wedding vows. To all those present it seemed that the timeless splendor of St. Paul's sanctuary perfectly complemented the historic significance of the occasion ... for the date, July 29, 1981, marked the first marriage of a Prince of Wales in over a hundred years.
