Tom Bjarnason: Cayman Islands/Royal Wedding Remembered On the arm of her Prince and husband, Princess Diana began her journey down the aisle. As the soft light of St. Paul's sanctuary caught her radiant smile, her dress and the glittering Spencer family tiara, Diana looked every bit like a fairytale-princess. She was an extravagantly romantic figure on that historic July morning. The gown she wore departed from the modern tradition of simplicity and found its inspiration in Queen Victoria's wedding gown of 1840. The Princess also adhered to folklore by wearing something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. The old was a flounce of antique lace which belonged to Queen Mary. The borrowed item consisted of diamond earrings loaned by Diana's mother, the Honorable Mrs. Shand Kydd. A tiny blue bow stitched to her dress' waistline fulfilled the requirement that she wear something blue. With her cascading bouquet Diana also adhered to tradition. It contained myrtle and veronica both cut from bushes grown from cuttings from Queen Victoria's wedding bouquet. The Prince was just as dashing in his full dress uniform, cut to the instructions of his late great-uncle, Earl Mountbatten. As the bride and groom came down the aisle in all their wedding finery, Edward Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No. 4 in G filled the sanctuary. They were leaving a ceremony they would fondly remember and secretly cherish all their lives. In that simple morning ceremony, they had declared their love before their kingdom ... and the entire world.
