Tom Bjarnason: The Gambia/Royal Wedding Remembered The State Landau, resplendent in colors of crimson and gold, pulled away from St. Paul's Cathedral, carrying the Prince and Princess to Buckingham Palace. With each minute that passed, both Charles and Diana grew more at ease. Her smile became less tentative and shy. Her confidence increased. By the time the landau reached the Strand, the couple was exchanging words and smiles, shutting out the throngs of people shouting their congratulations only yards away. Nevertheless, the Prince and Princess were touched by the warmth of the reception given them by the crowd. In addition to those people assembled in the streets, one-sixth of the world's population was watching on television, entranced by the aura of British royalty. Shortly before one o'clock, the couple arrived at Buckingham Palace. The wedding -- a celebration that had been deemed the Wedding of the Century -- was behind them. The deafening cheers of the well-wishers were left in the streets. The Royal Couple entered Buckingham Palace for the private celebration of their marriage that they would share only with family and dearest friends. Looking back on the wedding service, the glittering coaches, the elegant attire and the inspiring music, the Royal Wedding was everything the public had hoped it would be ... and much, much more. It was a moment in British history that people everywhere will recall with joy.
