Tom Bjarnason: Mauritius/Royal Wedding Remembered The Royal Wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer captured the imagination of nearly everyone in Great Britain. People from all walks of life eagerly anticipated the grand day when the heir to the throne would take a wife. In the days before the Royal Wedding when a Londoner spoke of "the wedding" it was generally understood that he was referring to the glorious royal occasion scheduled for July 29, 1981. An event of this grandeur, sparked a barrage of wedding gifts of every size and description. As an example, on July 29, in Central London, the capital's red busses were decked in giant ribbons and bows and they were designated jumbo-sized wedding presents for the Royal Couple. Another special wedding gift, one the entire world shared in via television, came on the eve of the Royal Wedding. This gift, the Hyde Park fireworks display, etched a blaze of color across London's night sky and proved to be a high point of the pre-wedding festivities. Together, the fireworks display, the pomp and pageantry of the wedding ceremony, the magnificent procession of glittering carriages and countless other memorable moments of the Royal Wedding all served to unify the British people and reaffirm their faith in the throne. For this splendid occasion, Britain took a holiday from her worries and celebrated the joy of being British. On July 29, 1981, the entire British nation -- and the world -- paused to celebrate with Prince Charles and his bride on their glorious wedding day. This painting was originally published on a Fleetwood® First Day Cover in honor of Princess Diana's twenty-first birthday, July 1, 1982. 17 Commonwealth nations joined together to each issue four stamps in tribute.
