Tom Bjarnason: Solomon Islands/Royal Wedding Remembered When historians reflect on Prince Charles' choice of Lady Diana Spencer for his wife, they will doubtless hail the wisdom of his decision. Many romantics would have had him choose an ordinary woman and through marriage transform her into a Cinderella princess. But, in reality, it is far more expedient that he chose Diana, a Briton who belonged to one of England's oldest and most aristocratic families, a woman who was aware of the demands placed on royalty. Princess Diana's lineage links her to more than one king. In fact, the Prince and Princess of Wales are sixteenth cousins, once removed. As a child, Diana played with Prince Charles' younger brother, Prince Andrew, who spent many hot summer afternoons in her family's swimming pool. Prince Charles was rarely a part of these happy moments for -- being thirteen years Diana's senior -- he was often away at school. Prince Charles first remembers meeting Diana in November 1977, when Diana's sister Sarah introduced them in the middle of a ploughed field. Prince Charles recalls, "I remember thinking what fun she was then." Scarcely more than three years after that encounter, Lady Diana was betrothed to Prince Charles. In the months following the announcement of their engagement, Lady Diana took Britain by storm. By the time the glorious wedding celebration arrived that sunny July morning, she had captured every British heart, winning their love with the same shy smile and endearing ways that enchanted the heir to the throne, Charles, Prince of Wales.
