Jeffery Matthews: Queen's 60th Birthday, Thistle and Bluebell The heritage of the British throne was one thousand years old in 1973 and though it has changed gradually through the years, it continues to be a force felt in the modern world. Over the course of The Queen's thirty-four year reign, she has both witnessed and helped orchestrate the subtle metamorphosis in The Throne. One of the primary results of this metamorphosis is that today, The Queen and her Royal Family are much more accessible to the common people than her predecessors. This is largely due to the character of The Queen herself. As an example, it is The Queen herself who insists on "walkabouts" which allow her to see more of her subjects and greet them on her tours of the world. These events have been enormously popular with the common people and have helped The Queen become one of the most beloved monarchs ever to reign. She is widely considered the epitome of graciousness and an excellent ambassador for her beloved Great Britain. Thus, it is little surprise that when The Queen celebrated her sixtieth birthday, people around the world joined in the celebration. This original work of art depicts the thistle and bluebell of Scotland, one of the countries which comprise the United Kingdom.
