Igor Sikorsky was only eighteen years old when he built his first airplane. And, though it wouldn't fly, it was still a profound start for the young Russian who had his head in the skies and his heart set on conquering them. This young aviator went on to become the acknowledged pioneer in three fields of aviation development -- multi-engined craft, helicopters, and long-ranged flying boats. On May 13, 1913, he astounded the world by making the first successful flight in a four-engined airplane. In the mid-1920's, Sikorsky constructed the twin-engine amphibious S-38 which Pan American Airways used to blaze trails to Central and South America. Over the years this renowned aviator gave the world an unsurpassed series of flying boats, all of which were known for their ease of handling and luxurious comfort. Though it came last, the helicopter was his own best-loved invention. His real moment of triumph came in 1939 when his VS-300, the first successful direct lift flying machine, took to the sky. It was the forerunner of a whole series of helicopters which culminated in his crane equipped helicopter. Igor Sikorsky had the longest continuous aeronautical career in history, one that spanned more than sixty years.
