David K. Stone: John Glenn
Artist: David K. Stone
On February 20, 1962, John Glenn piloted the Friendship 7 for three orbits around the Earth -- becoming the first American to orbit our planet. "I feel we astronauts have been given a great opportunity to add to man's knowledge," he said. "And I guess there is something of the pioneer in all of us. We are starting to explore the unknown frontier that surrounds us in space. We are just about where Columbus was when he set sail across an uncharted ocean, and where Charles Lindbergh was when he took off on the first solo flight across the Atlantic. We are plunging into something so new that no one is sure just what we will find or how it will work out." First spoken over four decades ago, Glenn's words are as timeless as the man himself.
