Bill Ramsey: Overland Stagecoach
In 1794, Congress authorized the postmaster general to use stagecoaches to transport the mail, because the volume had become far too great for it to be carried efficiently over long distances on horseback. Another reason for authorizing the stagecoach as a method of mail delivery was to encourage the coach lines to go places they might otherwise not have gone, and this encouragement proved largely successful. In time, daring, dedicated and resourceful stagecoach drivers, such as those of Wells Fargo, were delivering mail throughout the United States. In fact, Wells, Fargo & Company was a classic firm of the era. Founded in 1852, its stagecoaches delivered mail, freight and passengers to the new towns popping up in the vast spaces between the Missouri River and California. The company's founders, two New Yorkers named Henry Wells and William Fargo, are pictured on this cachet. Wells and Fargo had previously operated express lines in the east, and went on to control virtually all stage lines in the west. These lines faced every possible situation, condition and peril as they crisscrossed mountains, farmlands, deserts and plains. Before the Wells Fargo stagecoaches lapsed into history, they gave transportation of the mail an adventurous aura in America's western states. Because of the fortitude of their drivers, the stagecoaches are second to none when one thinks of heroism in delivering the mail. Artwork Copyright © 1980 Unicover Corporation.
