Jim Butcher: The Old Windmill
Taller, plainer and sturdier than post mills, many English smock mills built along the east coast have survived the rigorous test of time and nature. The original smock-top grist mill represented by this renovated windmill near Newport, Rhode Island, dates back to 1790. The Old Windmill, as it is called, was originally built in Warren, Rhode Island, and was used to grind corn. In the 1960's, the Newport Restoration Foundation, under the direction of tobacco heiress, Doris Dukes, bought the mill as part of a renovation project. Moving the windmill to a new location proved to be an incredible task extending over two years. The mill could not be lifted by helicopter and hauling it by truck would interfere with power lines. Eventually, the mill tower was cut in half, placed on two separate trucks and transported in two sections to Newport. Reassembled in an idyllic setting on a farm a few miles north of Newport, the Old Windmill survived the move in excellent condition. The dome on top of the mill's octagonal wooden tower is fifty-eight feet high and supports four rectangular sails that soar seventy-two feet into the air. The tower has four floors and a pine pole that transmits energy to the mill's gears on the second floor. A state health law required that all wooden funnels be lined with stainless steel, but many other parts of this working windmill are the original wood and iron elements dating back to the late 18th century.
