Kay Breeden Williams: King Parrot
The Australian King-Parrot is endemic to forests and coastal woodlands of eastern Australia. In north Queensland it is uncommon but distributed widely in upland areas. The colorful adult male is always outnumbered by plainer birds (the females and juveniles). Food is mainly seeds, especially of eucalyptus and acacias but including a great variety of other plants. Size: Length 17 inches (43cm), 7.5-10 oz. (210-270g). These large, robust parrots are predominantly green and red in plumage. They have a broad, wedge-shaped tail, nearly as long as the wings, and tiny bills. Males and females differ in plumage. The male has a red head and breast, but in the female they are green, only the lower abdomen is red. The wings are mainly dark green tinged with bright, light green speculars. The rump is deep blue and so is the narrow band across the back of the neck. The bill is orange red and black, the eyes yellow. The call is a soft, high pitched whistling when perched, and a shrill crassak-crassak in flight.
