Marjorie Saynor: Children of Indonesia The children of Indonesia live mostly in rural farm villages and still observe the ancient traditions of their people that have been passed down from generation to generation. On the island of Java, for example, villagers still celebrate important family events with a ceremonial feast called a selametan. All the foods are dedicated to the heavenly spirits, and special Moslem prayers are offered as well. And, as in days gone by, village affairs are governed by an adat, a system of customs stressing cooperation. In their clothing too, village girls and women continue to follow the old customs and wear colorful skirts called kains which are long strips of cloth that wrap around the body. Perhaps one of the finest traditions that lives on in Indonesia today is the rich heritage of dance. The girls depicted in this artwork are performing the timeless movements of the Balinese folk dances. These dramatic, story-telling dances impart meaning with each hand motion. The girls may depict scenes of battle, adventure, or love. Many of the Balinese dances are based on ancient Hindu tales, and have forceful movements and rhythms. Often, the performances are long, lasting from nine at night until six o'clock the next morning. In both Java and Bali islands, an orchestra called a gamelan accompanies the dancers, contributing to the enchantment these ancient dances cast over all in the audience.
