A century ago fortunes were paid for rare species of Orchids, so collecting these beautiful flowers became a very competitive business. With great secrecy, and often at great personal danger, highly trained searchers looked for beautiful new species. The enormous popularity of the Orchid along with its unparalleled beauty have caused it to be heralded as the aristocrat of the plant world. The Orchid is also regarded as a plant of mystery. But, in spite of ancient legend, Orchids do not trap insects or people, nor do they possess aphrodisiac or medicinal qualities. In fact, the Orchid has little or no economic value beyond its popular ornamental beauty. The Orchid's delicate blossoms, captured at their most exquisite moment of bloom, create a visual explosion of color that has attracted and intrigued even the most discriminating floral gardeners. Perhaps one of the most treasured flowers of the world is the Beautiful Orchid. When Robert Brown discovered and identified this delightful flower on his Australian travels in 1821, he named it Calanthe. This generic name, coined from two words meaning beautiful flower, very aptly describes this truly lovely group of winter-flowering Orchids. Individual leaves range from one to four feet long and three to eight inches wide, delicate blooms of white, red or mauve appear in numbers of up to twenty per stalk. The clarity of color and graceful shape of the Beautiful Orchid can transform any vase, window box, or garden into a collage of Spring.

This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood® First Day Cover for the Republic of South Africa Beautiful Orchid stamp issued September 11, 1981.
