Gene Jarvis: Crested Orchid Orchids are the second largest family in the plant kingdom. Truly beautiful creations of nature, they offer one of the largest varieties in floral size, color and shape. The beauty of the wild species and elegance of cultivated hybrids are widely acclaimed. Blooming in colors of blue, mauve, purple, white, green, brown, cream, yellow, pink and red, the Orchid exposes its floral bouquet in the semi-deserts and the arctic, at sea level and in the high mountains of the Andes. Orchids are truly an adaptable and hardy flower that can be found growing in any nook or crevice. Colorful terrestrial Orchids thrive in marshlands, boggy areas, sandy soil, among lush grasses and quite often under trees in the darkest parts of the jungle. Although some Orchids are no larger than a pinhead, others have five to ten foot stems and flower stalks fifteen feet tall. Some have giant flowers with petals two feet long or sprays of fist-sized blooms and colors as varied as the rainbow. While a few Orchid blossoms are one color, most are spotted, outlined or striated with other shades. Indeed, the beautiful blossoms of the Crested Orchid featured in this artwork are primarily yellow but dazzle the eye with contrasting brown and purplish markings. These bright flowers remain in bloom for long periods of time. The Crested Orchid's generic name, Eulophia, was derived from the Greek word meaing handsomely crested and undoubtedly referred to the delicate crests on the lips of the fragile petals.
