Guenter Jacki: Bright Pink Orchid
Of all the flowers in the world, one of the most beautiful of all is the orchid. Orchids are also one of the most popular of all flowers. There are more than six thousand species of orchids grown throughout the world. Most orchids are found in tropical and subtropical areas, but many species are found in cool, damp woods and swamps. While there are many species, there are certain characteristics which are common to all orchids. Each orchid flower has three petals which may range in color from pure white to deep violet ... or they may be speckled or streaked. One of the three petals, called the lip, is always of a special shape. It may be long and narrow, wide with a fringe, or shaped like a pouch or slipper ... as in the case of the Ladyslipper Orchid. Even the blossoms of the orchid can take on special shapes. The blossoms of the Butterfly Orchid, found in Great Britain, look like white butterflies with red spots. The Holy Ghost Orchid was so named by early Spaniards because they believed its blossoms looked like the holy dove that flew down at the baptism of Christ. Another characteristic of the orchid is that each species is fertilized by pollen carried by one particular kind of insect. The size and shape of the orchid's blossoms attract only that particular insect and insure cross-fertilization of each species of orchid. Artwork Copyright © 1984 Unicover Corporation.
